Open Space to Soon Shine a National Spotlight on Oregon’s Modernist Architecture

By Marisa Swenson of Modern Homes Collective*

The Open Space series was created in 2019 by architecture enthusiasts and filmmakers Elias Tebache and Mick Aure, based in Los Angeles. This series is dedicated to preserving and portraying the essence of architecture through the medium of film. Being an architecture enthusiast myself, I have followed their work and have been a big fan of their efforts to document architecturally significant places around the country. Typically, the homes that they feature are vintage and very well preserved, with fascinating stories about how they came to be and about the architects who designed them. These micro documentaries are beautifully filmed, educational, and will be beneficial for many years to come.

I connected with the Open Space crew through social media because of our shared interest in architecture, and because Elias is a real estate broker in the LA area. Elias let me know that they were looking for their next out-of-state shooting locations and were considering the Portland area. We jumped on a call and helped them realize that it would be a very good choice for them, as we have so many significant homes and architects that we would love to shine a national spotlight on. We connected enthusiastic homeowners plus interviewees, and they made the trip up in October when we were graced with a handful of beautiful, sunny fall days for them to shoot in. They were also lucky enough to witness the harvest moonrise from the Belluschi residence, which is a once-in-a-lifetime treat.

I am very excited to have Pacific Northwest architects and architecture featured at this level, and can't wait to see and share what they have captured.
