This is Historic – Over 600 Organizations Come Together & Sign-on to an Open Letter to Congress

Today, an Open Letter to Congress Defending Section 106 was unveiled publicly with over 600 signatory organizations – an unprecedented number from every corner of the nation, including Restore Oregon. Over the last few days, we led a quick behind-the-scenes push to invite many of our colleague organizations in Oregon to join with us and we thank the many who also joined! Please read the letter and the power of collective action!
In addition, the National Trust for Historic Preservation issued a separate concise and powerful letter expressing deep concerns as a voting member of the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation.
This fight is much bigger than letters.
None of us asked for Section 106 to face the threats it faces today. But those threats have created an opportunity that may prove much more important. They have brought us together to defend the work of historic preservation and the historic places that need our active support, voice and action.
Please look for an upcoming Action Alert as we will need everyone to help turn the corner with this existential threat to the work of historic preservation. We will be mobilizing separate actions to help defend and improve Section 106 for our nation.
The fight was NOT on Restore Oregon’s work plan or “BucketList”.
Our small staff did not plan for all this new advocacy work this year but we are still required to do the hard work that is now in front of us. This will be a sustained long-term effort, likely for the next 18+ months.
