The Cumberland Church
Albany, Oregon
Built: 1892
Constructed in 1892, the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, also known as the Main Street Church, has stood as a landmark anchoring east Albany for 126 years.
It is Albany’s only Queen Anne church, and is eligible for the National Register of Historic Places. The building retains its unique historical integrity through architectural details such as original stained glass windows, doors, and ornate trim work.
Unfortunately, the church has stood mostly vacant for the past 18 years. The City of Albany purchased the church in 2000 during the reconfiguration of the Main Street and Santiam Road intersection, with plans of relocating it. Since then, however, it has sat unused and is considered surplus. The church is showing the signs of deferred maintenance and is under threat of demolition.
With your contributions, Restore Oregon will be able to assist the “Friends” group, Save Our Cumberland Church (http://www.savethecumberland.org/), fund a redevelopment plan. With a large, open floor plan, high ceilings, and 126 years of history, the Cumberland Church is ideally suited for adaptive reuse as a community center. This project was funded in part by the Oregon Cultural Trust and Kinsman foundation:
